What to see and do in Murero

Murero
Village
Murero is a municipality in the comarca of Campo de Daroca, in the province of Zaragoza, situated in the narrow valle del río Jiloca, between the Campo de Daroca plateau and the sierra de Atea. It has 85 inhabitants (INE 2025), compared with the 225 it had in the mid-19th century. In 1248, by privilege of James I, it broke away from Daroca and joined the Comunidad de Aldeas de Daroca, dissolved in 1838. It is renowned for its important Cambrian palaeontological sites. Walking through the village one can see the parish church of Santa María La Mayor, in rubblework with brick corners, the hermitage of San Mamés, with 18th-century frescoes and a 16th-century panel painting, and several traditional peirones dedicated to various religious devotions.
Church of Murero
Monument
The parish church of la Asunción in Murero (Campo de Daroca, Zaragoza) is, on the whole, a 17th-century work built over a 15th-century construction, with a porch added in the 19th century; in 2008 it was fully restored, including the tower. The village is famous for its palaeontological trilobite site from the lower and middle Cambrian, considered the most important such site in Spain and one of the most notable of the Cambrian worldwide: some species, such as Paradoxides mureroensis, were first described here.
Paleontological trilobite site of Murero
Nature
The palaeontological trilobite site of Murero, located in the stratigraphic sequence of the Rambla de Valdemiedes, preserves fossils from the lower and middle Cambrian and is considered the most important trilobite site in Spain and one of the most significant of the Cambrian worldwide. The species Acadoparadoxides mureroensis was first described here in 1958, and four other taxa were given scientific names in tribute to the site. Research at the site is currently led by Eladio Liñán, professor of Palaeontology at the University of Zaragoza.
