What to see and do in Villafeliche

Villafeliche
Village
Villafeliche is a municipality of the Community of Calatayud, in the province of Zaragoza, with 163 inhabitants (INE 2025), situated beside the Jiloca river, at 724 metres of altitude, in the Calatayud-Daroca depression. Between the 18th and 19th centuries it was Spain's largest gunpowder-making centre, with about 165 mills driven by the Jiloca in 1764 and close to two hundred by around 1800, supplied with saltpetre from Épila and sulphur from Teruel; the popular saying 'it burns better than Villafeliche gunpowder' spread its fame as 'the gunpowder village'. The Reales Fábricas (Royal Factories) played a key role in the Sieges of Zaragoza during the Peninsular War, until Ferdinand VII closed them in 1830, although clandestine production continued until 1964, when the last of its mills stopped working.
