What to see and do in Chiprana

Chiprana
Village
Chiprana, in the Bajo Aragón-Caspe of Zaragoza province, rises at 178 metres of altitude, its buildings climbing from the plain to crown a hill that serves as a lookout over the Ebro. In its territory lies the Salada Grande de Chiprana, the largest and deepest salt lagoon in the Iberian Peninsula, protected within the managed nature reserve of the Saladas de Chiprana. It preserves the Roman mausoleum of Chiprana, built into the walls of the hermitage of la Consolación and declared a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish heritage-protection category) in 1931. Templars and Hospitallers of St John had a presence in the town until the disentailment. Its patronal festivities in honour of San Roque, on 16 August, include the release of a fire bull. Chiprana now has 496 inhabitants.
Salt Lagoons of Chiprana
Nature
The managed nature reserve of the Saladas de Chiprana, in the province of Zaragoza, protects an endorheic complex of six lagoons —among them the Salada Grande de Chiprana, the Salada de Roces and the Prado del Farol— with an area of 155 hectares and a peripheral protection zone of 361 hectares, declared in 2006 by the Government of Aragon and also included as a Site of Community Importance. The Salada Grande, which reaches 5.6 metres in depth in May, is unique in Europe for its characteristics and great depth; its saline, transparent waters allow sunlight to penetrate them, making possible the photosynthesis of the plant species that live there.
Gothic Church of Chiprana
Monument
Gothic church of Chiprana, known as the bride of the Ebro, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. It is a Gothic temple from the 14th-15th centuries belonging to a type with very few examples in Aragon. It preserves wooden roof trusses and vaults in the side chapels, as well as Mudejar paintings discovered recently.

Landscape around Chiprana
Nature
Steppe and dry-farming landscape around Chiprana (Bajo Aragón-Caspe, Zaragoza), next to the municipality's salt lagoons, declared a Managed Nature Reserve of the Saladas de Chiprana. The surroundings are characterized by paleochannels between which depressions of varying size appear, with Aleppo pine woods on the hillocks and dry-farmed and irrigated crops on the flatter land; agriculture is the main activity. The central lagoon, with permanent water, covers 31 hectares with a maximum depth of 5.6 meters and is the only deep, permanent-water saline endorheic lagoon in western Europe, with pioneer vegetation of saltwort and Mediterranean plants such as thyme and rosemary.
Ethnological Museum of Chiprana
Monument
A space devoted to the traditional life of Chiprana and its lagoon surroundings.
Almond and guirlache
Food and drink
The almond tree shares the dry land with the olive throughout the district. With toasted almond, honey and caramel the guirlache is made, a hard turrón prepared for Christmas, and also the sugared almonds sold at fairs and pilgrimage festivals.
