Berrueco
Village
Berrueco is a municipality in the comarca of Campo de Daroca, in the province of Zaragoza, situated at 1,087 metres above sea level, with part of its territory within the Reserva natural dirigida de la Laguna de Gallocanta. In 1248, by privilege of James I of Aragon, it broke away from Daroca and became part of the Sesma del Campo de Gallocanta, within the Comunidad de Aldeas de Daroca, dissolved in 1838. In the mid-19th century it had 95 inhabitants, and the place, with its parish church of the Assumption of Our Lady, appears described in Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico. It preserves the Celtiberian site of El Castellar and the castle of Berrueco, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It now has 32 inhabitants.
