What to see and do in Villanúa

Villanúa
Village
Villanúa is a mountain municipality in La Jacetania, in Huesca, known for its caves and its natural surroundings, nestled in the Pyrenean valley of the Aragón river at the foot of the Collarada peak, 2886 metres high. It has 569 inhabitants, although in high season the tourist population reaches 6000 people, spread across five districts. Its inhabitants, nicknamed gitanos for having formerly bred horses sold at French fairs, occupy a territory that was once the bed of a glacier, whose moraine, after the thaw, left behind the plain of the Cubeta de Villanúa. The place name, a Latinised form of the original Bellanuga, already appears in a document from the year 992. In its territory lie the abandoned hamlets of Cenarbe and Aruej.
