What to see and do in Las Regueras

Las Regueras
Village
Las Regueras is an Asturian concejo bordering Illas, Llanera, Grado, Candamo and Oviedo, and owes its name to the many streams and rivulets that water its soil. Its most populous localities are Escamplero and Satullano, the capital of the concejo, linked to Oviedo by a railway line that runs as far as San Pedro de Nora. The relief, made up of low hills and mountains, is split between slate, sandstone and limestone, with the sierra del Cogollo as its main reference point; it is bounded to the south by the Nalón river, its main watercourse, and to the east by the Nora river, the border with Oviedo. Its 1,892 residents live 72% off the land, mainly from Friesian cattle, and preserve San Pedro de Nora, a pre-Romanesque church attributed to the time of Alfonso II the Chaste.
Church of San Pedro de Nora
Monument
The church of San Pedro de Nora, in the concejo of Las Regueras, stands by the Nora river, twelve kilometres from Oviedo towards Trubia. Built in the 9th century under the reign of Alfonso II the Chaste and attributed to the master builder Tioda, it is one of the temples of the first period of Asturian pre-Romanesque; it was declared a national monument in 1931 and in 1985 was included, together with the monuments of the Kingdom of Asturias, on Unesco's World Heritage list. With a basilical plan of three naves separated by round arches on pillars and a triple flat-ended apse, it suffered a fire during the Civil War of 1936 and was rebuilt between 1952 and 1964 by the architect Luis Menéndez Pidal, who added the bell tower.
Meanders of the Nora
Nature
Incised meanders of the Nora river along the stretch before its confluence with the Nalón, between San Pedro de Nora and the Priañes reservoir, separating the concejos of Oviedo and Las Regueras; its 72 hectares were declared a natural monument by Decree 16/2003, of 13 March. The riverbank holds extensive stands of white willow and, within the area of influence of the Priañes reservoir, a holm oak wood; wildlife includes several species of wintering birds and the common frog. Geologically it lies in the region of folds and thrust sheets of the Asturian zone of the Cantabrian massif.
