What to see and do in Corvera de Asturias

Corvera de Asturias
Village
Corvera de Asturias is a municipality of about 15,800 inhabitants, located between Avilés and Gijón, which broke away from the municipality of Avilés in the sixteenth century. It lived from agriculture until the installation of the Ensidesa steelworks, today Arcelor, turned it into an industrial hub and drew large numbers of workers. Divided into seven parishes, its main settlements are las Vegas, Los Campos, Cancienes and Trasona; its relief is of gentle hills and shallow valleys, with Prietu peak, at 362 metres, as its highest point, and it preserves at El Escañorio an area with ferns unique to their species. Beside the Trasona reservoir, a regular destination for hikers, a canoeing centre operates that hosted the 2010 European Championship.
Reservoir of Trasona
Nature
The Trasona reservoir, in the concejo of Corvera de Asturias, is owned by ArcelorMittal Asturias and was brought into service in 1957 to supply water to the steelworks of the Avilés comarca and to the population then arriving in the area from various parts of Spain; it is fed by the Alvares and Narcea rivers, the latter through a 27-kilometre canal. Beside the reservoir stands the Trasona Sports Technification Centre, devoted to canoeing, which was refurbished in 2010 for the European Canoeing Championships, with a new control tower, a fixed stand for 300 people and a floating platform for medal ceremonies. The centre also has a residence for the Spanish federation's youth team and the offices of the Asturian federation.
Church of Santa María de Cancienes
Monument
The most notable church in the municipality, prized above all for its altarpieces, which bring together much of Corvera's historic religious imagery in a valley now marked by the steel industry and major roads.
Church of Santa María de Solís
Monument
The parish church of the Solís valley, whose origins most probably go back to the pre-Romanesque period, between the 8th and 10th centuries; it is the oldest church in a municipality with plenty of scattered rural hermitages and chapels.
Hórreos and paneras of Cancienes
Curiosity
The Cancienes valley preserves a fine group of hórreos and paneras on pegollos, with carved colondras and decoration in the Villaviciosa style, evidence of the raised granary around which the Asturian farmhouse was organised.
Funerary stele of Molleda
Curiosity
Found on Monte Presa, this sandstone stele broken in two preserves an inscription dedicated to the gods and, in its upper part, a head carved with geometric strokes; it is one of the most singular archaeological pieces of the concejo.
