What to see and do in Peñamellera Alta

Peñamellera Alta
Village
Peñamellera Alta is an Asturian concejo of about five hundred residents, in a valley between the Cuera mountain range, which reaches 1,315 metres at the Turbina peak, and the Picos de Europa, with the Tajadura as its highest point, at 1,446 metres, on the border with Cantabria. Its capital, Alles, has held that status since 1869, the year it split from neighbouring Peñamellera Baja, with which it had shared a historical fate ever since both territories, together with Ribadedeva, were removed from Asturian jurisdiction in 1230 until their return in 1833. The Cares river runs through its gorge along the border with Cabrales and offers much-valued hiking routes. Among its now-reduced wildlife remain roe deer, chamois, wild boar and wolves. The cave of Llonín, found in 1971, holds Paleolithic art.
Cave of Llonín
Nature
It was discovered in 1957 by cheesemakers looking for a place to mature their cheeses; it holds more than a hundred figures and signs, the largest repertoire of Asturian cave art, and entered the World Heritage list in 2008, within the group of the Cave of Altamira and the Palaeolithic cave art of the Cantabrian coast. It is also known as concha da Cova or the cheese cave, and was not made publicly known until March 1971, when it was disclosed by the Polifemo caving group of Oviedo. Its drawings depict bison, reindeer and goats, among other animals. Owing to its frequent collapses it remains closed to the public, although a copy of a small part of the cave can be visited at the Teverga prehistory park.
Protected Landscape of the Sierra del Cuera
Nature
A protected area running, parallel to the coast, along a ridge some forty kilometres long between the Sella and Deva rivers, in eastern Asturias, spread across the municipalities of Cabrales, Llanes, Peñamellera Alta, Peñamellera Baja and Ribadedeva. The western stretch of the sierra, between the Bedón and Sella rivers, lies outside this protected status. Its highest point is the Turbina peak, at 1,315 metres, on the boundary between Peñamellera Alta and Llanes. In all, its protected area of a little over 130 square kilometres combines forests, valleys, slopes and summits along this entire coastal stretch.
Ruins of San Pedro de Plecín
Monument
The church of San Pedro de Plecín, today in ruins, stands about five hundred metres from Alles, the capital of Peñamellera Alta. It is a late Romanesque temple built in the last quarter of the 12th century over an earlier pre-Romanesque chapel dedicated to San Salvador; it was extended to the west in the 13th century, remodeled and given a porch in the 15th, and in the 16th a funerary chapel was added on the north side. It was a parish church until 1787, when the new church of Alles was built. It preserves the apse, the south doorway with four pointed archivolts and a honeycomb-pattern hoodmould, and several late-12th-century corbels carved with animals, musicians and human figures.
