What to see and do in Ribadedeva

Ribadedeva
Village
Ribadedeva is an Asturian concejo bordering Cantabria, with around 1,690 inhabitants, separated from that community by the Deva river, which flows into the ría de Tinamayor. Its capital, Colombres, stands 110 metres above sea level between three mountain systems: the Cuera range, which exceeds 500 metres, a small central range, and the Tina range, next to the protected coastline of the Costa Oriental de Asturias. The Cabra river, which rises in the Cuera range and forms the border with Llanes, and the Deva itself, one of the region's salmon rivers, shape its river network. In Colombres, the Quinta Guadalupe houses the Archivo de Indianos, documenting emigration to America, and in Pimiango the cave of El Pindal opens up, with painted bison.
Cave of el Pindal
Nature
The Pindal cave opens near Pimiango, in the municipality of Ribadedeva, at the eastern edge of Asturias, with a linear layout divided into an eastern sector, open to the public, and a western one with restricted access. Its cave paintings, known since 1908, form a cavity about three hundred metres long with twenty-nine animal figures painted and engraved thousands of years ago: thirteen bison, eight horses, a hind, a stag, a fish and a mammoth -extremely rare motifs on the Cantabrian coast- along with abundant red signs such as dots, strokes and claviform figures. Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1924, it has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since July 2008, within the group Cave of Altamira and Palaeolithic cave art of the Cantabrian coast.
Quinta Guadalupe and the Indianos Archive
Curiosity
A mansion that the emigrant Íñigo Noriega Lasso had built in Colombres in 1906 and named after his wife; since 1987 it has housed the Fundación Archivo de Indianos and the Museum of Emigration, devoted to the Spanish exodus to the Americas.
Quinta Guadalupe
Historical milestone
Íñigo Noriega Laso, an emigrant who made his fortune in Mexico, built this returned-emigrant house at Colombres in 1905-1906 to plans by Ramón Lavín Casalís; since 1987 it has housed the Archive of the Indianos and the Museum of Emigration.
