What to see and do in Muros de Nalón

Muros de Nalón
Village
Muros de Nalón is the second-smallest municipality in Asturias, with eight square kilometres and about 1,950 inhabitants, in the Avilés district, between the Cantabrian Sea, Soto del Barco, Pravia and Cudillero. It has two settlements: the capital, Muros, to the south, and San Esteban de Pravia, at the mouth of the river Nalón, which in the mid-twentieth century was an important port for shipping coal from the mining basins. It preserves the fifteenth-century palace of Valdecarzana and Vallehermoso, and the church of Santa María; from the Mirador del Espíritu Santo a wide panorama of the coast can be seen. It belonged to Pravia until it was set up as an independent municipality on 14 April 1847, and was called Muros or Muros de Pravia until 1916, when it took the name Muros de Nalón.
Beach of el Aguilar
Nature
An open beach with heavy surf, wedged between cliffs, the main one in the smallest municipality of the comarca. A promenade and a long stairway connect it with the village, which sits on top of the coastal platform.
Coal port of San Esteban de Pravia
Curiosity
Although it bears the name of Pravia, the port is actually in Muros de Nalón: it preserves loading cranes from the first decades of the 20th century and port buildings erected between 1926 and 1940, through which Asturian coal was shipped out. Located on the left bank of the ria of Pravia, at the mouth of the Nalón, it enjoyed its heyday between the late 19th century and the mid-20th century as the port from which coal mined in the basins of Mieres, Aller, Riosa, Teverga, Quirós, Cangas del Narcea and Tineo was shipped, carried by the railway known as El Vasco. It also preserves an old lighthouse overlooking the harbour mouth, and on the other side of the ria lies the village of San Juan de la Arena; today its use is mainly recreational, with a few fishing boats.
Painters' colony of Muros
Curiosity
The Muros artists' colony, also called the La Pumariega school of painting, brought together a group of painters between 1884 and 1890 at the La Pumariega estate, in the concejo of Muros de Nalón. It was founded by the painter Casto Plasencia, from La Alcarria, after accepting a summer invitation from his pupil and friend, the Asturian Tomás García Sampedro, to stay at his parents' estate. Following the model of the Barbizon school, its members painted from life, mixing landscape and scenes of everyday life in the manner of Jules Breton or Jean-François Millet. In early 1890 the town council authorised a project for a permanent home for the colony, but Plasencia's death, in May of that year, officially dissolved the group, leaving Muros linked to landscape painting.
Viewpoints Trail
Activity
A coastal walk of some five kilometres between the port of San Esteban and Aguilar beach, linking the Atalaya viewpoint and the hermitage of the Espíritu Santo, which is reached by more than four hundred steps.
House of Valdecarzana and Vallehermoso
Monument
Of the palace complex of the 15th and 16th centuries there remain a square tower surrounded by a wall and a Plateresque doorway with the arms of the Cienfuegos, Rúa, Ponte and Quirós. It is the chief monument of the villa, although it is still in private hands.
