What to see and do in Cudillero

Cudillero
Village
Cudillero, Cuideiru in Asturian, is a municipality and pixueta fishing town on the Asturian coast, with about 4,900 inhabitants, whose houses are stacked amphitheatre-fashion above a fishing port that remains important and draws much of the summer tourism; since 2021 it has been part of Spain's Most Beautiful Villages. The demonym pixueto/a refers to its traditional dedication to fishing, as opposed to the caízos of the upper part of the town, given over to trade. Every 29 June L'Amuravela is proclaimed, a burlesque sermon in verse and local speech, and among its heritage stands out the Quinta de Selgas, a nineteenth-century palace with gardens that holds a work by Goya. Its coast, with Cabo Vidio as its chief landmark, is listed as a Protected Landscape, and preserves remains of the La Garita and La Cavona castros.
Beach of el Silencio
Nature
Also called El Gavieiro, this is about five hundred metres of rounded pebbles enclosed between quartzite cliffs, next to the village of Castañeras, in the municipality of Cudillero; it has no direct road access. It is included within an SPA zone and a site of Community importance, and forms part of the Paisaje Protegido de la Costa Occidental de Asturias, a designation that in practice still remains formally undeclared. It is a living textbook of coastal geomorphology.
Cape Vidio
Nature
Cabo Vidio juts into the Cantabrian Sea next to the hamlet of Oviñana, in the municipality of Cudillero, with cliffs almost a hundred metres high between coves and beaches. At its tip stands the Cabo Vidio lighthouse, in service since 1950 and managed by the Avilés Port Authority, within a walled enclosure with two separate buildings. It is one of the most open viewpoints in western Asturias and an essential landmark for anyone sailing this coast.
Bog of Las Dueñas
Nature
Twenty-six hectares of peat bog declared a natural monument on 25 July 2002, a rare ecosystem beside the sea because this kind of wetland is common in the mountains. It nurtures mosses, carnivorous plants, marsh violet and arnica.
Quinta de Selgas
Monument
At El Pito, a 19th-century palace surrounded by gardens that combine a French layout with English landscaping and which holds an art collection with works attributed to Goya and El Greco. It receives some twenty-four thousand visitors a year.
L'Amuravela
Curiosity
Every 29 June, the feast of San Pedro, a resident of Cudillero recites in verse, in Pixueto, a satirical sermon reviewing what has happened during the year in the town and in the world; the custom dates back to the 16th century, linked to the building of the parish church in 1569, and it fills the amphitheatre of houses around the harbour. It was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional (Spain's designation for festivals of national tourist interest) in 1976. After the sermon a salute manoeuvre is performed, recalling the return from the conquest of Florida by Alonso Menéndez Marqués, whose ship was built in Cudillero with a crew from the town, and two xigantes are burned beside the preacher. The sermon was suspended several times over its content, until in 1946 the mayor and the parish priest revived it, agreeing to hold it without the presence of the saint.
Church of Santa María de Soto de Luiña
Monument
Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a Spanish heritage-protection category), it has a Latin-cross plan with three naves and as many chapels, a semicircular apse and a three-tiered square tower at the foot. It forms a group with the rectory house, with which it once made up an old pilgrims' hospital on the coastal route of the Camino de Santiago, and it was built over an earlier chapel raised beside a spring. The main altarpiece, baroque and probably the work of José Bernardo de Mena, is dedicated to Our Lady of Humility; since 2015 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the Camino de Santiago de la Costa, and it preserves a silver processional cross of 1609 attributed to the Valladolid goldsmith Juan de Nápoles Mudarra.
Curadillo of Cudillero (dried dogfish)
Food and drink
Air-dried fish made from small sharks that were once caught for the oil of their liver; the pieces are hung for months on balconies and glazed galleries, and their skin was even used to sand down the boats. Today it is being recovered as a pixueto dish.
