What to see and do in Vilardevós

Vilardevós
Village
Vilardevós is a municipality in the province of Ourense, in the comarca of Verín, bordering Portugal, with 1,616 inhabitants according to the 2025 register and an area of 152 square kilometres. The Serra das Penas Libres divides its mountainous territory toward the Támega and Mente rivers, tributaries of the Douro, with the highest point at Mount Alto da Cota, at 1,091 metres. The municipality's dolmens, the castro of Florderrei and a 7th-century sarcophagus found at Arzádegos attest that the territory has been inhabited since ancient times. As a border territory it suffered the vicissitudes of relations between Spain and Portugal: in 1569 Portuguese armies invaded and devastated it as far as La Gudiña, and during the Ancien Régime it was under the jurisdiction of the Count of Monterrey.
Hillfort of Florderrei
Nature
A fortified settlement in this border concello of almost 153 square kilometres, lying at 743 metres above sea level between the Serra de Penas Ceibes and the valleys of the rivers Támega and Mente.
Burial mounds of Vilardevós
Nature
Prehistoric burial mounds scattered across the municipal district, where the so-called cadaleito of Arzádigos also appeared, a burial dated to the seventh century; the concello comprises thirteen parishes.
Mountain range of Penas Ceibes
Nature
A ridge that runs through the municipality and separates the Támega and Mente basins; the parishes of a mountainous municipal district that was under the lordship of the Count of Monterrei are scattered across its slopes.
Church of San Miguel de Vilardevós
Monument
Parish church of the capital of Vilardevós, at 743 metres above sea level, head of a concello of thirteen parishes spread across a mountain district bordering Chaves and Vinhais. The church, dedicated to San Miguel, is a building with a rectangular nave and a pitched roof, a façade with a round-arched doorway, and a bell-gable pierced for two bells, dating from between the Early Modern period and the 19th century. It belongs to the diocese of Orense, within the archpriesthood of Verín, and forms part of the Vilardevós Parish Care Unit together with the parishes of Moialde, Berrande, Soutochao, Vilar de Cervos, Osoño, and Vilardevós itself.
Mente River
Nature
River that crosses Vilardevós on its way to the Portuguese border and to the Duero basin; together with the Támega it drains a municipal district of 152 square kilometres of mountainous relief and very scattered settlement.
Sarcophagus of Arzádegos
Curiosity
Sarcophagus of the 7th century found in the parish of Arzádegos, testimony of the early-medieval occupation of these border lands, which had already been settled in castro times as the castro of Florderrei proves.
Portuguese invasion of Vilardevós
Historical milestone
The Portuguese troops entered in 1569 through this stretch of the border, in one more episode of the frontier clashes that punctuated the history of a territory under the jurisdiction of the count of Monterrei.
