What to see and do in Avión

Avión
Village
Avión is a concello in the Ourense comarca of Ribeiro, with around 1,700 inhabitants, perched on the Suído and Faro de Avión mountain ranges, which rise above a thousand metres, and watered by the river Avia and its tributaries. From 1375 it belonged to the lordship of the Sarmiento family, counts of Ribadavia, and the Order of the Temple had already arrived here by 1215. Its best-oriented slopes are given over to vineyards of the Ribeiro designation. It has lost almost 40% of its population since 2001, and preserves as ethnographic heritage the shepherds' huts of the Suído. Businessmen such as Amancio Ortega, Carlos Slim and Olegario Vázquez Raña have their summer residences here, and the municipality holds Mexican festivities in summer.
Lighthouse of Avión
Nature
Mountain range that closes off the municipality of Avión to the west, at the western end of the Ribeiro, adjoining the Serra do Suído -separated from it by the rivers Tea and Avia- and shared with Melón, Carballeda de Avia, Covelo and A Cañiza. It rises to 1,155 metres between the headwaters of the Avia and the Cerves, from where both Ourense and Pontevedra can be seen. Its ecological value is exceptional: it is home to wolves, golden eagles and eagle owls, extensive peat bogs and oak groves (carballeiras), and traces of an ancient glacier. It feeds the Miño with rivers such as the Brul, the Cerves, the Deva and the Tea, and has sites such as the Tourón waterfall. On its slopes also rises the Avia, which together with the Couso, the Valderías and the Cardelle forms the river network of Avión. It has no protected status and is heavily affected by wind farms.
Mountain range of o Suído
Nature
The Serra do Suído, a natural border between the provinces of Pontevedra and Ourense, extends on its Ourense side across the municipalities of Avión and Beariz; it rises above a thousand metres at several points, with the Sesta Cerrada (1,059 m) as its highest point, and on its slopes rises the river Avia, which gives its name to the district. Formed mainly of Hercynian granite, it is one of the rainiest areas of Galicia and preserves fragas (native woodlands) of oaks, Pyrenean oaks and cork oaks on its middle slopes, with gorse and scrub at higher elevations. It has long had a pastoral use: the chozos (herders' huts) of the Suído are still preserved, used for centuries by the people of Avión to bring livestock in summer to the pastures known as sesteiros, as well as wolf traps.
Emigration from Avión to Mexico
Curiosity
The emigration that began in the late 19th century turned this mountain municipality into a seasonal village: its roughly 2,600 winter residents pass 5,000 in summer, when the emigrants come back from Mexico.
