Mountain range of o Suído Nature · Avión, Ribeiro, Ourense The Serra do Suído, a natural border between the provinces of Pontevedra and Ourense, extends on its Ourense side across the municipalities of Avión and Beariz; it rises above a thousand metres at several points, with the Sesta Cerrada (1,059 m) as its highest point, and on its slopes rises the river Avia, which gives its name to the district. Formed mainly of Hercynian granite, it is one of the rainiest areas of Galicia and preserves fragas (native woodlands) of oaks, Pyrenean oaks and cork oaks on its middle slopes, with gorse and scrub at higher elevations. It has long had a pastoral use: the chozos (herders' huts) of the Suído are still preserved, used for centuries by the people of Avión to bring livestock in summer to the pastures known as sesteiros, as well as wolf traps.
