What to see and do in O Páramo

O Páramo
Village
O Páramo is a lucense concello of about 1,265 inhabitants, situated between the province's central plain and the serra do Páramo. Its name comes from the Latin Paramiensis, already documented in a 1078 parchment, and the territory goes back to the old Condado Paramiensis, delimited at the 6th-century Council of Lugo by the confluence of the Sarria and Neira rivers, the Neira itself to the north, the Miño to the west and the Sil to the south. In the Middle Ages the convent of San Salvador do Páramo stood here, documented since the 10th century. The municipal capital, formerly at Trebolle, was moved in 2006 to the settlement of O Páramo, which grew up around the Campo de la Feria. The concello is divided into eighteen parishes, among which the Romanesque church of San Salvador de Vileiriz stands out.
Church of San Salvador de Vileiriz
Monument
A 12th-century Romanesque church that keeps its original rectangular apse, one of the finest examples of rural Romanesque in a municipality also dotted with mámoas, castros and pazos between the plain and the hills.
Palace of Vilafiz
Monument
A manor house in the parish of Vilafiz, one of several scattered across the municipality along with those of Paredes, Camba and A Torre; its ashlar walls and its coat of arms recall the weight of the minor rural gentry in Galicia.
Mount of o Páramo
Nature
At 876 metres it is the summit of the range occupying the south of the municipality and separating the Lugo plain from the Neira valley; its slopes of scrub and woodland receive more than a thousand millimetres of rain a year in an oceanic climate.
Neira river
Nature
The Neira is a tributary of the Miño that rises in the Serra do Portelo, in the concello of Baleira, at 840 metres above sea level, and runs 56 kilometres before flowing into the Miño, at the meeting point of the concellos of Guntín, O Páramo and O Corgo. As it passes through O Páramo it crosses a valley cut between wooded slopes and forms a natural boundary with O Corgo; its cold, trout-filled waters have preserved mills, fish weirs and riverside forests of alder and birch, in a course of great fishing and ecological richness.
First mention of the Paramiense county
Historical milestone
The acts of the council held in Lugo in 569 record the name of this territory as the Paramiense county, the oldest surviving written reference to the lands that today form the concello.
Galician Lacón (cured pork shoulder)
Food and drink
A salted and cured pork shoulder covered by a protected geographical indication, the basis of the cocido that in these parishes is boiled with turnip tops, potato, chorizo and chickpeas at the winter pig slaughters.
