What to see and do in Guadalupe

Guadalupe
Village
Villa located at 640 m altitude, with 1,722 inhabitants (2025) and 68.2 km² of municipal territory. The town grew up around the hermitage built after the finding of an image of the Virgin in the Guadalupe river, in the late 13th or early 14th century; the name "Puebla de Santa María de Guadalupe" is already recorded in 1347, and in 1349 its prior received the title of lord of the town. In addition to the monastery, it preserves remains of medieval walls, the Jewish quarter with 14th-16th-century houses, and the Granja de Mirabel (15th-16th centuries).
Real Monasterio de Santa María de Guadalupe
Monument
According to tradition as recorded by the Hieronymite chronicler Fray Diego de Écija (1467-1534), a shepherd—later identified, in 1743, as Gil Cordero—found the image of the Virgin that gave rise to the sanctuary. King Alfonso XI, after the Battle of the Salado, granted a royal privilege on December 25, 1340 confirming the sanctuary; the archbishop of Toledo established a secular priory on January 6, 1341, and by a decree of Juan I, on August 15, 1389, it became a Hieronymite monastery, an order that kept custody of it until the 1835 disentailment; Franciscans have attended it since 1908. The monastery was a key site in the preparations for Columbus's first voyage, which he visited in 1486, 1489 and 1493, and Native Americans were baptized there on July 29, 1496. It was declared a Monumento Nacional in 1879, raised to minor basilica by Pius XII in 1955, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The complex combines Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles, with a 14th-15th-century Mudejar cloister as its most characteristic feature.
Fiestas patronales y romerías de Guadalupe
Historical milestone
The town's festive calendar includes the pilgrimage-festival of San Blas (February 3), the Feast of the Cross (May 3), the patron saint festivities in honor of Santa María de Guadalupe (September 6 to 9), and the Jornadas de Solidaridad entre los Pueblos Hispanos (Days of Solidarity among Hispanic Peoples) around October 12, a date linked to the monastery's role in the history of the evangelization of the Americas.
Ermita del Humilladero
Monument
15th-century Mudejar hermitage located in Guadalupe, protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
Hospital de San Juan Bautista
Monument
Former monastic hospital in Guadalupe where, with papal authorisation from Pope Eugene IV, some of the first documented anatomical dissections in Spain were performed.
Arca del Agua y Pozo de la Nieve
Monument
Historic infrastructure of Guadalupe's monastery: the Arca del Agua, from the 14th century, with galleries carved into the mountain, and the Pozo de la Nieve, from the 16th century, used to supply the monastic hospitals. The complex is completed by old mills dating from the 14th to the 16th centuries.
Puebla de Santa María de Guadalupe
Historical milestone
Alfonso XI granted land to the first settlers around the sanctuary in 1340; the settlement appears documented as "Puebla de Santa María de Guadalupe" from 1347, and in 1349 its prior received the title of Lord of the Puebla.
