What to see and do in Caudete de las Fuentes

Caudete de las Fuentes
Village
Caudete de las Fuentes is a municipality in the comarca of Requena-Utiel, in the province of Valencia, Spanish-speaking, whose name comes from the Arabic al-Qabdag and the Latin caput aquae (“head or source of water”), from which it gets the epithet “de las Fuentes” for its abundance of water. Through its territory, of winegrowing tradition and flat relief dotted with sierras exceeding 900 metres, once passed the Camino de Aníbal and the Vía Augusta, and it was intensely settled from the Bronze Age onwards. It preserves the Iberian site of Kelin, on the cerro de Los Villares, with superimposed settlements inhabited until shortly before the turn of the era, where Iberian and Roman coins and gold and silver jewellery have been found. The village stands at 775 metres above sea level and has 725 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Iberian site of Kelin
Nature
Former Iberian settlement of Caudete de las Fuentes, one of the most important archaeological sites in the area, known as Los Villares or the ancient city of Kelin. It was continuously inhabited from the 7th century BC to the 2nd-1st centuries BC, and covers about 10 hectares from the acropolis down to the Madre de Cabañas River. Elongated dwellings with stone plinths and adobe walls have been documented, along with remains of a wall, handmade pottery and Phoenician and Greek red-varnish imports; Kelin even minted its own coinage (asses and semisses) between the second half of the 2nd century and the early 1st century BC. Consolidated and restored in 2004, it forms part of the Ruta dels Ibers of the Diputación de Valencia and can be visited, with annual open-house days.
