What to see and do in Camporrobles

Camporrobles
Village
Camporrobles is a municipality of La Plana de Utiel-Requena located at the north-western end of the Utiel plateau, on the boundary with Castile-La Mancha, with a territory of cereal crops, vineyards and almond trees between the sierra de la Bicuerca and the sierra de Mira. It has 1,183 inhabitants. Next to the village rises the cerro de El Molón, where there was a large Iberian settlement and, above it, in the Andalusi period, a hisn, or fortified settlement of some size; today the hill houses an archaeological park with an attached interpretation centre. In Roman times the territory saw intense cereal-growing colonisation, with at least four rural villas scattered across the territory. The municipality obtained its own jurisdiction in 1782 after centuries of dependence on Requena.

Archaeological Park of El Molón
Monument
Archaeological site of Camporrobles located on a hill next to the village, with an adjoining interpretation centre. It stands at 1,124 metres above sea level, on a large Cretaceous rock outcrop of the Sierra de Mira, elongated in shape and divided into several platforms. It was a small oppidum of 2.65 hectares occupied from the Final Bronze Age or Early Iron Age until the mid-1st century BC, and was reoccupied in the second half of the 8th century as an Andalusi hisn, a hilltop fortress, abandoned as a place of residence around the 10th century. It preserves a large rectangular tower of about 40 square metres, a moat, a wall and an underground postern, as well as cisterns cut into the rock and the layout of the Islamic settlement, with a mosque with mihrab, dwellings, a watchtower and an albacar (livestock enclosure).
Separation of Camporrobles from the term of Requena
Historical milestone
The village situated at the north-western end of the plateau obtained its own jurisdiction in 1782, after centuries of dependence on Requena. The new district brought together lands of cereal, vineyard and almond on the limit with present-day Castilla-La Mancha.
Almond from the Camporrobles plateau
Food and drink
The almond occupies hundreds of hectares in the district, shared out among the vineyard and the cereal. The late varieties better withstand the frosts of the plateau and their fruit supplies turrón and confectionery workshops of the Comunitat Valenciana.
