Narboneta
Village
Narboneta is a municipality of Serranía Media-Campichuelo y Serranía Baja, in Cuenca, between the Picacho and the Vega, linked to the history of the old Marquesado de Moya. Its 13th-century fortress, on a crag overlooking the valley, formed part of the defensive frontier line of the Castilian reconquest together with Serralla, Mira and Aliaguilla, in the disputes between Albarracín and Requena. The name refers to the Gascon soldiers who enlisted in the Castilian troops during the conquest of Cuenca; King Alfonso VIII rewarded them with the fortress and its lands, giving rise to the town around 1223. A 669-metre railway viaduct crosses the Narboneta river, the largest structure on the Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia line. It has 42 inhabitants.
