What to see and do in Zarra

Zarra
Village
Zarra is a municipality of El Valle de Cofrentes-Ayora, in Valencia, between the sierra de las Atalayas (985 m) and the cerro Gordo (869 m); the village stands at 605 m, beside the Zarra river, whose valley widens here into orchards irrigated by the Acequia Madre. It has 374 inhabitants and is Spanish-speaking. Its place name, probably of Basque origin, would mean "old"; tradition places here the valley's first governance after the Reconquista. Prehistoric remains have been found in the Cueva Valle, and there is record of Roman and Arab gravestones in its territory. It preserves the old Presa de los Comuneros (dam), in the river canyon, and in 2010 it was among the candidates to host Spain's nuclear waste storage facility, a proposal that did not go ahead.

Zarra and the 2010 nuclear storage facility
Historical milestone
In 2010 the Ministry of Industry included this town of fewer than four hundred households among the candidates to host the centralised temporary store for nuclear waste. The proposal met with the opposition of the regional government and did not go ahead.
Manchegan gazpachos of the valley
Food and drink
Stew of game or of fowl cooked over pieces of unleavened flatbread, inherited from the neighbouring Manchegan cooking. It is made in a deep pan with rabbit, partridge or chicken, thyme and garlic, and it is eaten from the same vessel in which it has been cooked.
