What to see and do in Sant Joan de Moró

Sant Joan de Moró
Village
Sant Joan de Moró is a municipality of La Plana Alta, in the province of Castellón, near Castelló de la Plana, situated in the valley of the rambla de la Viuda at 178 m of altitude, with 3,695 inhabitants. Its history has been linked to neighbouring Vilafamés: the first trace of the settlement is the Castell de Moró, recorded since 1100, set on the Tossal de Mollet as an Aragonese possession, following successive settlement by Iberians, Romans and Muslims until the Christian donation of 1238. The process to separate from Vilafamés began in 1957, the Supreme Court confirmed it in 1987, and independence came in 1990, making it the youngest municipality in the province. The village and its hamlets sit on the flat land known as the Plá de Moró.
Hermitage of Sant Miquel de Sant Joan de Moró
Monument
A hermitage on the mountain of Sant Miquel, the goal of a pilgrimage festival shared by the people of Sant Joan de Moró and Vilafamés in the week following the Magdalena festival.
Hermitage of Sant Vicent de Sant Joan de Moró
Monument
Since 2007 a pilgrimage has been held every April to this hermitage, of modern design and built that same year, in which fogassetes (sweet buns) are handed out to everyone attending. It stands next to the Font del Ros, in the municipal district of Sant Joan de Moró, and is reached by a paved track that branches off the Pla de Lluch road, through Mediterranean woodland inhabited by the Spanish imperial eagle and the wild goat. Because of the open-cast mine that surrounds the area, local people popularly call it Sant Vicent Titadyne.
Parish Church of Sant Joan de Moró
Monument
Built in 1887 as a hermitage when the village was barely a cluster of houses, with a single rectangular nave, a wooden staircase to the choir and stained glass by Fernando Vicent; it was raised to an independent parish in 1952.
The separation of Sant Joan de Moró
Historical milestone
After proceedings begun in 1957 and a Supreme Court ruling in 1987, the hamlet separated from Vilafamés and became its own municipality in 1990, the youngest in the province of Castellón. Its history had until then been tied to that of its neighbouring town: Iberians, Romans, Muslims and Christians occupied these lands in succession, and the first trace of the settlement is to be found in the Castell de Moró, already documented in 1100 on the Tossal de Mollet, an Aragonese possession that formed part of the defensive belt of Montornés.
The carob-tree mushroom
Food and drink
An orange fungus that grows on the old trunks of the district's carob trees and is cooked in batter or stewed; its peculiar flavor has made it a much sought-after product in local cooking.
