What to see and do in Borriol

Borriol
Village
Borriol is a municipality of La Plana Alta, in Castellón, at 208 metres of altitude between the mountains of the Desierto de Las Palmas and the Moró mountain range. The territory was already populated in antiquity, as shown by the cave paintings of l'Albaroc, and the Vía Augusta passed through it, of which a milestone is preserved in the local museum; on a rock dominating the village stand the remains of a castle, of which today only a walled gate remains standing. It received a settlement charter from Jaime I in 1250, and its population was mostly Muslim until the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609. It lives from dryland farming, with olive and carob trees, besides the ceramics sector. It preserves the hermitage of Saint Vincent Ferrer, from the 17th century, with the stone where the saint preached in 1410. It has 6018 inhabitants.
Festivities of Borriol
Activity
Borriol celebrates its patronal festival, dedicated to Sant Bartomeu and Sant Roc, in the week of 24 August, with bulls, dances and concerts.
Hermitage of San Vicente Ferrer de Borriol
Monument
The hermitage of San Vicente Ferrer, a 17th-century building, stands on the outskirts of Borriol, about two kilometres from the town centre, next to the road leading to Puebla Tornesa, in a square with benches, trees and a large stone cross. It is declared Bien de Relevancia Local (local-level heritage protection designation), in the category of monument of local interest. It was built in 1667 and reformed in 1730, on the spot where, according to tradition, the Dominican Vicente Ferrer preached on 14 April 1410. The facade, whitewashed and topped with a baroque single-bell espadaña, displays above the door a ceramic panel with the saint's image, dated 1667. Inside, the stone on which the saint is believed to have preached is preserved. The feast is celebrated on the Monday after Easter, with a pilgrimage from the parish of San Bartolomé to the hermitage.
Castle of Borriol
Monument
The castle of Borriol, a ruined medieval Arab fortress that dominates the village from a hill to the north of the settlement, occupies, in the Plana Alta comarca, the site where in Roman times a watchtower may have stood, visually linked to other nearby watchtowers to guard the Vía Augusta. The present fortress, of Muslim layout profoundly reformed by later Christian constructions, is organised on three levels: the upper level preserves towers, a cistern and remains of walls and auxiliary structures; the middle level was modified in the 19th century to adapt it as a military garrison; and the lower level corresponds to the wall defending the access path. It has been declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 25 June 1985.
The settlement charter of Borriol
Historical milestone
James I granted in 1250 a settlement charter to the place that guarded the passage of the Via Augusta northwards; the seigneury later passed through the hands of the bishop of Tortosa and of lineages such as the Boïl, Tous and Casalduch.
