Benafer
Village
A municipality in the Alto Palancia comarca, in Castellón, Spanish-speaking, at 587 metres above sea level, with a dry-farming economy based on almond, olive and cherry trees. Of Andalusi origin, it kept its Muslim population after the reconquest until their expulsion in 1368, following a rebellion during the war of Castile; that same year the alquería received a founding charter, completed and ratified in 1379 by the bishop of Segorbe, Íñigo de Valterra, who had bought the place. It later belonged to the barony and county of Jérica and to the Exarc, Cucaló and Castellví families, members of whom were academicians of the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in the 18th century. Within its municipal area lies the Cerdaña cave, with stalactites and stalagmites. It has 168 inhabitants (INE 2025).
