What to see and do in Olite/Erriberri

Olite/Erriberri
Village
The historic capital of the merindad (district) that bears its name, Olite lived its golden age in the late Middle Ages, when Carlos III the Noble and his wife Leonor de Trastámara made it the seat of the court. It today has about 4,070 inhabitants and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Navarre.
Palacio Real de Olite
Monument
Carlos III the Noble expanded the existing castle at the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th century, turning it into a royal palace, in Gothic style with French influences —towers, large windows, and balconies— combined with tilework and plasterwork of Iberian tradition. In 1813, during the Peninsular War, the guerrilla leader Espoz y Mina ordered it burned to prevent its use by French troops. After 19th-century abandonment, a 1923 competition commissioned its restoration to the architects José and Javier Yárnoz, with work beginning in 1937. It was declared a Monumento Nacional (National Monument, the heritage protection category used in Spain until 1931) together with the church of Santa María on 17 January 1925, and it is today a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). Part of the complex functions as a Parador Nacional (state-run hotel).
Iglesia de Santa María la Real de Olite
Monument
A Gothic church begun in the early 13th century, with a facade completed around 1300 and a Renaissance altarpiece by Pedro de Aponte. It was declared a Monumento Nacional (National Monument, the heritage protection category used in Spain until 1931) together with the Palacio Real in 1925.
Murallas de Olite
Monument
Olite preserves stretches of walls of Roman and medieval origin that still partially surround the historic quarter.
EVENA, Estación de Viticultura y Enología de Navarra
Food and drink
Founded in 1981 as a publicly owned company of the Government of Navarre —known until 1986 as Evensa—, the Estación de Viticultura y Enología de Navarra (Navarre Viticulture and Oenology Station) is based in Olite, on the foundations of an old winery. It is dedicated to quality control and wine-growing experimentation, and carries out the analyses and tastings for the Consejo Regulador (Regulatory Board) of the Denominación de Origen Navarra.
Fiesta Medieval de Olite
Activity
On the weekends of August, Olite revives its courtly past with a Medieval Festival declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico (Festival of Tourist Interest) of Navarre in 2018. The Palacio Real also hosts a Classical Theater Festival in July.
