The historic capital of the merindad (district) that bears its name, Olite lived its golden age in the late Middle Ages, when Carlos III the Noble and his wife Leonor de Trastámara made it the seat of the court. It today has about 4,070 inhabitants and is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Navarre.
