What to see and do in Areso

Areso
Village
Documented since 1192, the municipality separated from neighboring Leitza in 1770, the year it adopted its own coat of arms (a silver lion on an azure field) to replace the tree pierced by a wolf that it had shared with Leitza. It has 260 inhabitants (2025).
El secuestro del Olentzero de Areso
Curiosity
Between 2003 and 2005, the Christmas figure of the Olentzero in the square of Areso was repeatedly stolen. Investigations revealed that those responsible were Guardia Civil officers, who damaged the figures; two officers were disciplined and transferred.
