Araitz
Village
A valley documented since 1268, formed by the councils of Azkarate, Gainza, Intza, Uztegi, and Arribe (the capital), at the foot of the Sierra de Aralar. Because of its position on the border with Guipúzcoa, it was for centuries a "frontier of wrongdoers." It has 506 inhabitants (2025).
El proceso de brujería de Araitz de 1595
Historical milestone
In 1595, a witchcraft trial that ended in deaths was held in the Araitz valley; the episode inspired the film "Akelarre" (1983) by director Pedro Olea.
El corrimiento de tierras de Intza (1714)
Historical milestone
In September 1714, a large landslide destroyed much of the village of Intza, displacing more than half a million cubic meters of earth. The settlement was rebuilt with the scattered houses that still characterize it today.
