What to see and do in Valle de Egüés/Eguesibar

Valle de Egüés/Eguesibar
Village
A municipality 8.9 km from Pamplona, documented since the 11th century, formed by ten concejos (Alzuza, Ardanaz, Azpa, Badostáin, Egüés, Elcano, Elía, Ibiricu, Olaz and Sagaseta) and several settlements, among them Sarriguren, now the seat of the town council. Huarte split off as a town in 1663, Burlada became independent in 1971, and Mendillorri was annexed by Pamplona in 1998.
Museo Jorge Oteiza
Monument
A reddish concrete building designed by Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza in the concejo of Alzuza, inaugurated on 8 May 2003, barely a month after the death of the sculptor Jorge Oteiza, which occurred on 9 April that same year. The museum incorporates the artist's original house-workshop and includes a collection of around 1,700 sculptures and 2,000 pieces of experimental work.
Castillo-palacio de Gorraiz
Monument
A former palace of the concejo of Gorraiz, with its current structure dating from the 16th century, which originally bore the arms of the Esparza family. In 1756 it was acquired by an indiano (a returned emigrant made rich in the Americas), Juan Navarro Tafalla, a knight of the Order of Santiago, along with the lordship of the village. It held some strategic importance in the defense of Pamplona from the east, alongside a fortification on Mount Miravalles. Today, well preserved though altered, it functions as a restaurant.
