What to see and do in Bertizarana

Bertizarana
Village
A municipality made up of three concejos — Legasa, Narbarte (the capital) and Oieregi — and several scattered settlements, including the Señorío de Bertiz itself. Its coat of arms, featuring a mermaid, recalls a diplomatic mission of 1421 in which the persuasiveness and eloquence of the valley's envoys were praised.
Parque Natural del Señorío de Bertiz
Nature
A former lordship documented since 1392, when Charles III of Navarre appointed Pedro Miguel de Bértiz as warden of the mountains. Its 2,040 hectares of beech, oak and alder woodland, home to deer, roe deer and wild boar, were declared a Parque Natural on 25 March 1984. The southern part preserves a 3.4-hectare botanical garden with species brought from all over the world, next to the palace built in 1847 and extended in 1905.
La donación de Pedro Ciga
Historical milestone
The Spanish-American returnee Pedro Ciga bought the Bertiz estate on 20 October 1900 for 650,000 pesetas and, together with his wife Dorotea Fernández, restored the palace and its gardens. In 1949 he donated the estate to the Diputación Foral de Navarra on condition that it be preserved and used exclusively for recreational, educational and scientific purposes.
