The historic capital of the Alto Bidasoa, moved to its current location on the left bank of the Bidasoa river in 1421. The bridge over the Bidasoa, built in 1545 at the confluence of the Ezpelura and Ezkurra streams, replaced an earlier wooden footbridge. On Calle Mercaderes stands a 15th-century Gothic house with a pointed-arch doorway of eleven voussoirs decorated with pomegranate motifs.
