What to see and do in Baztan

Baztan
Village
At 373.55 km², it is the most extensive municipality in Navarre, made up of 15 united villages (Elizondo, the capital, together with Arraioz, Irurita, Lekaroz, Elbete, Berroeta, Ziga, Almandoz, Aniz, Arizkun, Azpilkueta, Errazu, Garzain, Maya and Oronoz-Mugaire). The valley, crossed by the Baztán river (upper Bidasoa), has 7,851 inhabitants (INE 2025) and more than 80% Basque speakers.
Hidalguía universal del valle de Baztán
Historical milestone
In 1397 King Charles III of Navarre declared that the inhabitants of the valley should be upheld in their status of 'fidalguía e infançonía', a universal hidalguía (petty nobility) that allowed any resident to bear the valley's black-and-white checkered coat of arms. Tradition attributes the design of the coat of arms — evoking the idea that war was, for them, a game of chess — to kings Sancho Abarca or Sancho VII el Fuerte after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212).
Palacio de Arizkunenea, Elizondo
Monument
A Baroque palace from around 1730 in Elizondo, capital of Baztán, today converted into a cultural centre. Alongside it survive other manor houses such as Beramundea, Istekonea (known as the 'Casa del Virrey', or Viceroy's House), Seroranea, Ospitalenea and Puriosenea, as well as the 17th-century town hall, formerly the seat of the valley's General Council.
Convento de Arizkun y su órgano de la "flauta vasca"
Monument
The enclosed Poor Clares' convent at Arizkun preserves an organ unique in Navarre, known as the 'flauta vasca' (Basque flute). A local tradition holds that couples about to marry would offer eggs to the cloistered nuns asking for good weather on their wedding day, a custom still occasionally practised today.
Colegio de Lekaroz
Monument
A former seraphic seminary founded in 1888 in the Baztán village of Lekaroz, one of the valley's great works of religious architecture.
Los agotes de Bozate
Curiosity
The Bozate neighbourhood, in Arizkun, is home to the best-documented agote community in Navarre: a historically marginalised and segregated group (with separate pews and holy-water fonts in churches) whose origin remains a matter of debate among historians.
Gastronomía del valle de Baztán
Food and drink
Baztán cuisine includes zopak (soups), busti, txuri ta beltx, lamb chops chilindrón-style, talo and cuajada. The valley holds its own fairs and food competitions, among them a contest for pinchos, bustis and broths made with pirenaica-breed beef.
Ferias de primavera y otoño de Elizondo y Baztandarren Biltzarra
Activity
Elizondo holds its traditional spring and autumn livestock and trade fairs, as well as the Baztandarren Biltzarra, the great annual gathering that brings together Baztán natives from the valley and from the emigrant diaspora around local culture and traditions.
