What to see and do in Regencós

Regencós
Village
Regencós is a small walled village in the Baix Empordà, very well preserved, situated at 78 m altitude next to Pals and Bagur, with a compact nucleus of stone houses behind its medieval fortified enclosure. The first references to its name date from 1312, when James II granted privileges, freedoms and immunities to Esclanyà and Regencós, previously granted by baron Gilabert de Cruïlles; later, Peter the Ceremonious granted Regencós, together with Esclanyà and Bagur, to the Cruïlles family, a lineage that came to control a large part of the Baix Empordà. That these documents speak of the village as a place and not as a castle suggests that its wall is later, from the late 14th or 15th century. Its main feast, for San Vicente, is celebrated on the Sunday closest to 22 January.
Walls of Regencós
Monument
The walls of Regencós are a fortification of the 14th and 15th centuries, declared a Bien Cultural de Interés Nacional (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), surrounding the small medieval centre of this municipality in the Baix Empordà. Of quadrangular plan, they retain two circular towers, one of them almost complete except for the upper battlements, now integrated into a house; two gateways, one with a round arch and large voussoirs; and long stretches of wall with loopholes, up to three metres high. The masonry is of large stones bonded with mortar. The place of Regencós belonged from at least 1312 to the Cruïlles-Peratallada, who were also lords of Begur and Esclanyà, and in the 1365-1370 hearth tax it appears counted together with Esclanyà, with forty-eight hearths.
