What to see and do in Mont-ras

Mont-ras
Village
Mont-ras is a town in the Baix Empordà, between Palafrugell and Palamós, which until the 19th century was part of the municipality of Palafrugell, from which it became independent in 1858; it was formerly called Torroella de Mont-ras and is already mentioned in 1062. It has access to the sea with small, uncrowded coves, such as del Crit, del Vedell and de la Font Morisca, and among its scattered hamlets Canyelles, Molines and Torre Simona stand out. The traditional economy, based on agriculture, livestock, cork stoppers and a notable mining activity of granite, barite and galena, has today given way to tourism. It preserves the parish church of Sant Esteve, rebuilt in 1599, and farmhouses such as Can Parals, with decorated 16th-century windows. It has 1,690 inhabitants (INE 2025).
Vedell Cove
Nature
Cala del Vedell is a small natural pebble beach located in the district of Mont-ras, in the Baix Empordà, facing south-east, about 95 metres long and 15 metres wide. Access on foot is difficult, which explains its low occupancy in summer. Together with els Canyers, Cala Estreta, Cap de Planes and el Crit, it is protected by the Plan for Natural Interest Areas under the generic name of Muntanyes de Begur. Its name may be due to the presence, in past times, of a species of seal now extinct on the Costa Brava, since vedell was a synonym for sea cow.
Crit Cove
Nature
Cala del Crit, on the coast of Mont-ras, is a small beach of coarse sand and gravel, 71 metres long and 15 metres wide, separated from cala de la Font Morisca by a bored-through rock; it is reached on foot along the camí de ronda coastal path, without services, and nudism is practised there. It is protected, together with other nearby coves, by the Muntanyes de Begur Plan for Natural Interest Areas. A local legend tells that a ship of Moorish pirates moored there at night and, at dawn, drawn by the crowing of a cock, attacked a nearby farmhouse; the owner's daughter, on being seized, screamed and bit the captain, who beheaded her with his scimitar; from those screams the cove took its name. In 1981 a residents' movement got the Generalitat to reject, in 1983, a marina project in the cove.
