What to see and do in Torrent

Torrent
Village
Torrent is a small agricultural municipality in the Baix Empordà (Girona), with 182 inhabitants (2025) and an area of nearly 8 km², spread over the last northeastern foothills of the Gavarres at 44 metres altitude. Its territory was already documented in 1017, when a papal document confirmed that the abbey of Sant Esteve de Banyoles held possessions there. Agriculture and livestock farming, especially cattle and pigs, are the predominant economic activities, and its producers sell mainly at the markets of Palafrugell and la Bisbal d'Empordà. It is known for the Mas de Torrent, an 18th-century farmhouse now converted into a luxury hotel.
Castle of Torrent
Monument
The medieval castle of Torrent, of the 14th-15th centuries and of which only remains survive today on the municipality's Plaça Major, gave its name to the marquisate of Castell de Torrent, a title created by Charles III on 25 March 1770 in favour of Felipe de Cruïlles de Peratallada-Rajadell i de Peguera, baron of Cruïlles and lord of Torrent. The title, granted as the marquisate of Castillo de Torrente, changed to its present Catalan name by authorisation of Juan Carlos I in 1994.

Dolmen of el Cementiri dels Moros
Nature
A megalithic dolmen in the les Gavarres massif, dated to around 3000-2500 BC, corresponding to the Final Neolithic, which has yielded more archaeological material than any other in the area, with the remains of more than a hundred burials. It is a V-shaped Catalan gallery of which seven vertical support slabs of the chamber and twelve of the access passage survive, with a burial chamber 12.30 metres long covered by an oval barrow with a peristalith of radial structures. It was brought to light by the Geli family of Begur, owners of the estate, and Salvador Raurich published its first description in 1923. Inside, more than 1200 dental pieces and thousands of pottery fragments were found, along with necklace beads, bone buttons and flint arrowheads.
