Castle of Claramunt Monument · la Pobla de Claramunt, Anoia, Barcelona The castle of Claramunt overlooks la Pobla de Claramunt (Anoia, Barcelona), documented since 978 in a bull of Pope Benedict VII. Within its walled precinct stands the church of Santa Maria, Romanesque, from the mid-11th century, with a basilical plan of three naves and three semicircular apses, of which two are preserved, decorated with friezes of blind arches. In 1463, during the Catalan Civil War, the complex was demolished by order of the council of Igualada because it was in the hands of the counts of Cardona, supporters of John II; it was rebuilt in 1484, although of the church only the naves of the preserved apses were remade. Worship was abandoned in 1606, and since then every first of May the Aplec of the Holy Cross is celebrated in the courtyard of the castle.
