What to see and do in Rueda

Rueda
Village
Rueda is a town in the Valladolid comarca of Tierra del Vino, declared a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (a heritage-protection category for historic urban ensembles) and the centre of the Rueda designation of origin, the country's leading white-wine region, made mainly with the native verdejo grape. Its municipal area, home to 1,118 inhabitants, includes the hamlets of Foncastín and Torrecilla del Valle and stretches between two hills bathed by the Perú stream and the Zapardiel river, surrounded by pines, olive trees, cereal crops and vineyards, 40 kilometres from Valladolid. Its Cristo de las Batallas chapel, built in 1734, was paid for with wine donated by the townspeople.
The oldest designation of origin in the region
Historical milestone
Recognised in 1977 and definitively approved in 1980, the Rueda designation of origin is the oldest in Castile and León; it covers more than 11,700 hectares in the provinces of Valladolid, Segovia and Ávila.
The verdejo of Rueda
Food and drink
A native variety adapted to the harsh climate and to the pebble soils, it yields whites capable of improving in the bottle for twenty years or more; its production generates some six hundred direct jobs in the town.
The underground wine cellars of Rueda
Curiosity
Below street level extends a network of excavated cellars that runs across the whole municipal district; the fire of 1896, which destroyed more than five hundred houses, never reached those galleries.
The La Nava-Rueda bird protection area
Nature
This protected area for birds covers pine woods, wetlands and riverside groves of the municipal district and gives shelter to great bustards, imperial eagles and migratory waterbirds in the very heart of the wine comarca.
