What to see and do in Lastras de Cuéllar

Lastras de Cuéllar
Village
Lastras de Cuéllar is a village in Segovia province, located at the northern edge of the province, in the Tierra de Pinares district and halfway between Cantalejo, Cuéllar and Segovia, with around 295 inhabitants. The Cega river runs through it, creating along its banks a landscape of alders, birches and Scots pines, and its municipal area contains an interesting lake system formed by the Carrizal and Tenca lagoons. Its origin dates back to the 12th century, as part of the resettlement of the Community of Town and Land of Cuéllar, and until the 19th century it was simply known as La Lastra. On the hill of La Serreta, Beltrán de la Cueva built a 15th-century hunting lodge that is still preserved on one of the oldest hunting estates in Spain.
Palace of la Serreta
Monument
La Serreta was a hamlet of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Cuéllar, documented since 1138 and already depopulated by 1751, located south-southwest of Lastras de Cuéllar beside the river Cega. In the 15th century, Beltrán de la Cueva, favourite of Henry IV of Castile and first Duke of Alburquerque, lord of Cuéllar, had a palace built there that still stands, together with the San Antón hermitage, and created around it one of the oldest hunting estates in Spain, where King Juan Carlos I once hunted. The estate, amid pine woods and far from any inhabited settlement, also preserves a traditional river-crab fishing reserve. In 2018 it was sold for 19 million euros to a company that is promoting there the recovery of the European bison, with 18 specimens since 2019.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Sacedón
Monument
Outside the built-up area, this hermitage preserves a Renaissance altarpiece attributed to the so-called master of Sacedón; the municipality also has the hermitage of the Humilladero at the entrance to the village.
Pilgrimage of la Virgen de Sacedón
Activity
On Whit Monday the locals go up in pilgrimage to the hermitage accompanying the wooden carving of the Virgin, with traditional dances and dulzaina; the main festival, by contrast, is held on 8 September.
Lagoons of the Carrizal and the Tenca
Nature
Two wetlands of special ecological interest dot the municipal district, among pinewoods and banks of the Cega peopled with willows and birches; they are scarce and valuable water points in a sandy landscape that drains rapidly.
The pottery of Lastras
Curiosity
The village maintained for centuries a strong pottery tradition that made use of the clays of the surroundings; ceramics was, along with the pinewood and livestock, one of the pillars of its economy before rural depopulation.
