What to see and do in Villamol

Villamol
Village
Villamol is a municipality in the comarca of Tierra de Cea, in the judicial district of Sahagún, with about 135 inhabitants spread over 39.63 square kilometres at 829 metres of altitude. It is made up of Villamol, the head village, Villacalabuey and Villapeceñil, in addition to the hamlet of Trianos, where the old Dominican convent known as the monastery of Santa María de Trianos stands. In the village, the parish church is dedicated to San Esteban, the patron saint celebrated on 26 December.
Monastery of Santa María de Trianos
Monument
The ruins of the monastery of Santa María de Trianos stand in the deserted hamlet of Trianos, between the villages of Villapeceñil and Villamol, in the fertile flood plain of the río Cea, a little more than five kilometres north of Sahagún. It was entrusted from the outset to the modest order of the Augustinian Canons Regular, and its closeness to the monastery of San Benito de Sahagún always relegated it to a secondary role in the monastic landscape of the area. The scant surviving references to it describe a modest convent, but one placed directly under the patronage of the kings of León and the Holy See; its remains are today the most notable vestige of the network of religious houses that surrounded the great abbey of Sahagún.
Church of San Esteban de Villamol
Monument
The parish church dedicated to San Esteban, whose feast is celebrated on 26 December; it presides over a municipality of barely a hundred and thirty-four households spread between the seat, Villacalabuey and Villapeceñil.
Independence of Calzada del Coto
Historical milestone
Between 1842 and 1857 the municipal district of Villamol was reduced when Calzada del Coto separated as a municipality of its own, one of the many splits that multiplied León's town councils in the mid-nineteenth century.
Villacalabuey and Villapeceñil
Curiosity
The two villages that complete the municipality stand at 829 metres above the cereal plain, with earth-built houses and brick bell gables, and between them they add up to fewer households than houses built.
