What to see and do in Cebrones del Río

Cebrones del Río
Village
Cebrones del Río is a municipality in the province of León, in the Órbigo valley, with the hamlets of San Martín de Torres and San Juan de Torres and a combined population of about 440 inhabitants. The Romans passed through this territory on their way to Asturica Augusta, and at San Martín de Torres there is a pre-Roman hillfort identified with the ancient city of Bedunia. From that period also dates the bridge over the río Órbigo, possibly of medieval origin, which after falling into ruin was rebuilt in the classicist period with seven spans, six round-arched and one slightly pointed, and which today stands restored. The church preserves 17th-century paintings discovered when the high altar was dismantled, and in the town hall square a monument recalls the poet José Mayo Fernández, born in the town.
Bridge of Cebrones sobre el Órbigo
Monument
Probably medieval in origin, it was rebuilt in Classicist style to a design by Francisco Javier Castañón and Bernardo Miguélez. It has seven openings, six round-arched and one slightly pointed, over the flat course of the Órbigo.
Hillfort of San Martín de Torres
Nature
A pre-Roman fortified settlement declared an archaeological zone on 12 January 1995. Scholarly tradition places here the city of Bedunia, a staging post on the road that came up from the south towards Asturica Augusta.
Paintings hidden behind the high altar
Curiosity
When the high altarpiece of the church was dismantled, wall paintings of at least the 17th century came to light, hidden for centuries and restored a few years ago. They are one of the most notable recent finds on the banks of the Órbigo.

Nature
The Órbigo crosses the district from north to south over very flat ground, between 800 and 750 metres of altitude, and leaves in its wake a river beach, poplar groves and picnic areas much used in summer.
