Villadangos del Páramo
Village
Villadangos del Páramo is a municipality in the province of León, on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, with about 1,270 inhabitants. Its name, villa of Eneco, would recall a Basque founder from the Reconquista. Near the Estación quarter, in September 1111, a clash took place between the Galician supporters of Queen Urraca and the Aragonese of Alfonso I the Battler, who were disputing custody of Prince Alfonso, the future Alfonso VII. It was an ecclesiastical lordship between 1112 and 1580 and, from 1788, gave its name to the title of Marquis of Villadangos, created by Charles III. Beside the village lies the Villadangos lagoon, a former irrigation reservoir now turned into a wetland of high ecological value. Its church of Santiago holds a Churrigueresque altarpiece with the apostle on horseback.
Bell-gable tower of Villadangos
Monument
Built between the end of the 17th century and 1707, the year two of its bells were cast, with river cobbles below and brick above. The door dates from 1735 and above it are reliefs of the battle of Clavijo.
High altarpiece of Villadangos
Monument
A Churrigueresque ensemble presided over by a large equestrian Saint James, sword raised and a defeated figure at his feet. It is completed by canvases of the apparition of the Virgen del Pilar and of that of the Apostle to King Ramiro at Clavijo.
Lagoon of Villadangos
Nature
An area flooded in winter which was dammed in the 1940s for irrigation and abandoned in the 1980s when the canal was opened. Today it is a wetland of high ecological value included in the Catalogue of Wetlands of Castilla y León.
