What to see and do in Turcia

Turcia
Village
Turcia is a municipality in the floodplain of the Órbigo river, in the province of León, one of the areas of greatest hop production in Spain, also with abundant sugar beet cultivation; its stretch of the river forms part of the Santa Marina del Rey fishing reserve, famed for its trout. It brings together the settlements of Armellada, Gavilanes, Palazuelo de Órbigo and Turcia itself, the municipal seat, with around 975 inhabitants in total. The castro de Turcia was the first dated settlement in the Ribera del Órbigo, already inhabited in the Iron Age and possibly in Roman times; behind it ran a secondary road, the Senda de Astorga or Camino de los Maragatos, used until the current road was built around 1888. It keeps up traditions such as the ramo leonés and the mayo.

Nature
The stretch of the Órbigo that waters the municipality belongs to the Santa Marina del Rey fishing preserve, legendary for the quality of its trout. It is flanked by poplar groves and by a flood plain that is among the most fertile in the province.

Curiosity
A communal structure of four wooden posts and beams above, used to tie up animals so that they could be shod or treated. It is preserved under a shelter at Las Eras de Abajo and is being restored.
Fire at the Turcia town hall
Historical milestone
A spectacular fire destroyed the town hall and the old schools on the Plaza del Puesto de las Vacas. As the village was growing westwards, the new town hall was built between 1911 and 1913 beside the road.

Food and drink
The municipality lies in one of the largest hop-producing areas in Spain, the bitter plant that gives beer its character. Its trellises several metres high share the flood plain with the monoculture of sugar beet.
