What to see and do in Oencia

Oencia
Village
Oencia is a municipality in the comarca of El Bierzo, in the province of León, one of the corners of León where Galician is spoken. It sits in the valley of the full-flowing río Selmo, whose power was once harnessed for ironworks, between the Peña de Seo and the sierra de la Encina de la Lastra, with forests of birches, beeches, oaks and chestnuts where wolves, foxes, otters and roe deer live. Founded or repopulated in the Middle Ages within the kingdom of León, it was part of the tenencia of Aguiar and received its fuero in 1206; in the 15th century it passed to the Osorio family, Counts of Lemos, and in 1486 was integrated into the marquisate of Villafranca. With about 265 inhabitants, it preserves the bell tower of Santa María, the ruins of the castle of Lusío and the memory of the wolfram fever.
