What to see and do in Barjas

Barjas
Village
Barjas, whose Galician name is Barxas, is a mountainous municipality of barely 140 inhabitants in León's El Bierzo, one of the few in the province where Galician is spoken, situated at 844 metres beside the beech wood of Busmayor. Its church of Santa Marina, built in 1777, is a good example of the late Baroque of western Bierzo. In the 10th century King Ordoño II donated the mountains of Busmayor to the archbishopric of Santiago de Compostela, a donation confirmed in 1200 by Alfonso IX; the hamlet of Corrales, today part of the municipality, belonged to the Order of Malta until the 15th century and afterwards to the Marquises of Villafranca, who turned it into a hunting reserve. Like the rest of El Bierzo, Barjas suffered strong emigration during the 20th century that has depopulated the municipality.
Beech forest of Busmayor
Nature
A primeval beech wood occupying the head of a valley in the village of Busmayor, valued for its biodiversity and for the purity of its stand of common beech. Waymarked paths much used by botanists and walkers run through it.
