What to see and do in Valdesamario

Valdesamario
Village
Valdesamario is a municipality in León of around 165 inhabitants, on the southern edge of the Cordillera Cantábrica, east of the sierra de Gistredo, at the confluence of the Valdesamario and Omaña rivers; it comprises the districts of La Garandilla, El Castro, La Parte and La Velilla. It occupies the valley of the same name, geographically linked to Omaña though historically associated with La Cepeda. The sanctuary of La Garandilla, Herrerian in style and dating from the 18th century, restored in 2008, is known as the cathedral of Omaña, and its pilgrimage festival is held on 8 September; the earliest settlers go back to the castro de Garandilla, of Astur culture and the Bronze Age. Its mountains are still home to the capercaillie, threatened by wind farms, and the Valdesamario river is famed for its trout.
Shrine of la Garandilla
Monument
An 18th-century church of Herrerian design set over an earlier one, possibly of the 12th, and known throughout the comarca as the cathedral of Omaña. Its tower topped with spires, restored in 2008, is its most distinctive feature.

Nature
The valley, at the southern limit of the Cantabrian range, preserves oak woods, riverside birches and heather and broom scrub. Its wildlife includes the capercaillie, the wolf and the broom hare, endemic to the north of the peninsula.
