What to see and do in Llamas de la Ribera

Llamas de la Ribera
Village
Llamas de la Ribera is a municipality of 783 inhabitants situated on the right bank of the Órbigo river, in the León comarca of the same name, made up of four settlements. Its fertile vegas, occupied by the Astures and later by the Romans — who called the town Valdellamas and laid roads here towards Astorga and León on the way to the gold mines of Las Omañas —, are today devoted mainly to hop growing: the area produces between 95 and 99% of Spain's hops, harvested between August and September to give beer its bitterness and its stable head. Its best-known festival, the Antruejo, with guirrios and madamas, is celebrated on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday and is declared of provincial tourist interest.
Hermitage of el Calvario de Llamas
Monument
A 17th-century hermitage raised under the dedication of San Francisco after a supposed apparition on the spot. During Lent the processional figures were carried up to it from the parish church, stopping to pray at the stone crosses along the way.
The Antruejo of Llamas de la Ribera
Activity
A carnival masquerade held on the afternoon of the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, with masked guirrios and madamas in full dress, accompanied by the gomia, the bull, the rosita and the devil. It is a festival of provincial tourist interest.
