Zarzosa de Río Pisuerga
Village
Zarzosa de Río Pisuerga is a hamlet in the province of Burgos, in the comarca of Odra-Pisuerga, situated on the course of the Pisuerga river. It is first mentioned in a donation document of the year 969, and throughout the Middle Ages it belonged successively to the monasteries of Rezmondo and San Pedro de Cardeña, until in 1514 the council bought its own lands. As a behetría de mar a mar, attached to the Merindad de Monzón de Campos, its residents could choose and change their lord at will; a Royal Writ (Real Ejecutoria) of Philip II declared it a town in 1571. With 29 inhabitants, it retains the church of the Inmaculada Concepción, a Romanesque hermitage dedicated to San Miguel and a bridge over the river dated 1785; its patron saint's festival is celebrated on the third or fourth Sunday of August.
