What to see and do in Tamarón

Tamarón
Village
Tamarón is a hamlet in the Odra-Pisuerga district, in the province of Burgos, whose name has remained linked to the battle that, in 1037 and very probably in its vicinity, pitted Ferdinand of Castile against Bermudo III of León; the death of the Leonese king in the contest opened the way to the union of the kingdoms of León and Castile. It preserves the church of the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, dependent on the parish of Iglesias, within the archpriestship of Amaya, in the diocese of Burgos. It has 52 inhabitants.
The battle of Tamarón
Historical milestone
The Battle of Tamarón pitted the troops of the Leonese king Bermudo III against those of the Count of Castile Fernando Sánchez and his ally García Sánchez, King of Pamplona, in 1037. The clash originated in the dispute over the Tierra de Campos, between the Cea and Pisuerga rivers, which Bermudo III wanted to recover for León and which Ferdinand I considered the dowry of his wife Sancha, sister of the Leonese king. Chronicles place the combat in the valley formed by the Sambol stream, east of Castrojeriz. Bermudo III died in the charge, allegedly at the hands of seven enemies; 21st-century autopsies have counted sixteen lance wounds, all fatal. Without descendants, the throne passed to his sister Sancha, who ceded it to her husband Ferdinand I, thus uniting the crowns of Castile and León.
