What to see and do in Pampliega

Pampliega
Village
Pampliega is a town of 281 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, in Burgos, located on a hillside above the Arlanzón river, overlooking the valley; mentioned by Ptolemy as Ambisna, it was one of the important crossroads of the period. Here the Visigothic king Chindasuinth was proclaimed king in 642, and the Visigothic king Wamba withdrew and died in the now-vanished monastery of San Vicente; his remains, moved to Toledo by Alfonso X, remain a local symbol today, recalled by a monolith, a street and a square. The town preserves part of its medieval wall, with the Presencio gate still standing, and the Renaissance church of San Pedro, with a tower-porch and Gothic doorway, which houses an altarpiece by Domingo de Amberes in walnut, oak and pine, one of the finest in the comarca.
