What to see and do in Los Balbases

Los Balbases
Village
Los Balbases is a town in the comarca of Odra-Pisuerga, in the province of Burgos, set at 824 metres above sea level on the Castilian plain watered by the Arlanzón river, the boundary of the municipal territory to the south-east. With 298 inhabitants, it retains the stately air of its past: it was the summer residence of doña Berenguela and other figures of the court, such as Ambrosio Spínola, first marquis of Los Balbases, a title that took the town's name. From that period remain arched gateways, manor houses and two monumental churches: San Millán, built in Gothic style in the second half of the 13th century on a hill overlooking the Vallehermoso district, and San Esteban, with a grand staircase. The village also has an ethnological museum and another of religious art.
The Gothic church of San Esteban
Monument
The church of San Esteban is a Gothic temple from the mid-13th century, as is its main portal, with a wide splay and sculptural sobriety. It is reached by a three-flight stone staircase, the work of the Hernaltes family and Francisco Bocos in the second half of the 18th century. With a Latin-cross plan, it is striking for its slenderness, the height of its Gothic vaults and the dimensions of its three naves and transept, worthy of a cathedral, in addition to Romanesque remains preserved inside and outside. The main altar is presided over by a Baroque altarpiece by José Carcedo, from 1787 to 1790, with Hispano-Flemish panels from the late 15th century by the Master of Los Balbases and scenes from the life of San Esteban. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1992.
