What to see and do in Redecilla del Camino

Redecilla del Camino
Village
Redecilla del Camino is a municipality in the province of Burgos, with 98 inhabitants, located on the Camino de Santiago, on the north side of the sierra de la Demanda, where the Rioja plain begins; it is the first village on the Camino Francés on entering Burgos, and its urban layout, stretched from east to west, follows the pattern typical of the Way. Its existence is documented from around the year 968, and it was cited as one of the most important villages on the Camino in the Codex Calixtinus, the first pilgrim's diary, written by the French clergyman Aymeric Picaud. It preserves Romanesque remains, including the monumental baptismal font, more than a metre in diameter, kept in its church of the Virgen de la Calle and famous along the Way.

Monument
In the church of the Virgen de la Calle a twelfth-century Romanesque font is preserved on eight half-columns: its gadrooned basin is carved as a walled city of four storeys of windows, a usual reading of the heavenly Jerusalem.

Historical milestone
The cartulary of San Millán de la Cogolla cites the place in 1028. Its development is owed entirely to the Camino Francés: it came to have a pilgrims' hospital under the dedication of San Lázaro, today gone.
